Many practitioners refer to procedures involving the injection of botulinum toxin as ‘anti-wrinkle injections’. Botulinum toxin is injected, using a fine needle, into the target muscle to temporarily block the nerve signal, resulting in weakening of the muscle action which can result in an improvement in the appearance of lines of facial expression.

Fat dissolving injections aim to destroy fat cells by damaging the fat cells plasma membrane, allowing the fatty acids inside the cell to be broken down and be naturally removed by the lymphatic system. In simple terms they liquify fat and allow the body to remove it naturally. The fat dissolving product is injected directly into the subcutaneous fat with either a needle or cannula.

It is important to use fat dissolving injections in conjunction with a healthy diet and regular physical exercise. Fat dissolving injections are not a substitute for lifestyle measures however they are useful at helping to remove stubborn localised fatty deposits that have been difficult to lose with diet and exercise measures alone.

Two Deso treatment products are available, Desobody and Desoface.

Desobody is used to target fat deposits on the body such as abdomen, flanks, upper arms, bra area fat, thighs and cellulite. Other body areas can also be treated.

Desoface is used to target fat deposits on the face and neck such as jowls and double chin areas.

The number of treatments required depends on the area of treatment as well as the amount of fat to be dissolved in that area. Generally, 2-4 sessions are needed at 4-6-week intervals. Initial results can be expected to be seen from 3-4 weeks.

Important Considerations

Every care is taken to deliver the products in a manner which will minimise risk, however you should be aware of the risks, as one may exist upon which you place particular significance.

Patients are advised to take in to account all these potential risks before consenting to treatment. Please make your clinician fully aware of your expectations prior to giving consent.

In rare cases the treatment has little or no effect. Results cannot be guaranteed.

Safety Profile

As with other treatments, there are risks and complications associated with Desobody and Desoface fat dissolving injections.

Common side effects include pain or burning sensation during the injections. Following injections itching, swelling and redness of the treated areas is likely soon after treatment. These effects should normally improve within 24 hours after the initial injections and should be greatly improved after 5 days. Bruising may occur after treatment which may take up to 2 weeks to resolve. The treated area may feel tender for up to 2-3 weeks after treatment. Sometimes people can faint or feel faint with injections, you must tell your practitioner as soon as possible if you feel unwell during the treatment.

Uncommonly you may experience transient nodules afterwards in the treatment area, these can feel lumpy but will resolve naturally in most cases within 1 month.

Rare complications include skin infection after treatment (cellulitis), allergic reaction or anaphylaxis to the product, nerve injury resulting in tingling and numbness in the affected area, skin pigmentation changes which may be permanent, permanent nodules and skin necrosis.

Your clinician will also discuss the suitability of treatment having considered your medical history and any medications you currently take, as appropriate. As such, it is imperative you disclose such medications at the time of your treatment.

Contraindications and Relative Contraindications to Treatment
• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
• Active skin disease or recent injection in the area to be treated
• Lipodystrophy
• Any disorder that would affect your metabolism of the active ingredient clearance of disrupted fat cells

Limited or no clinical data exists regarding the efficacy and tolerance of this treatment in patients having a history of, or currently suffering from, auto-immune disease or auto-immune deficiency or being under immunosuppressive therapy. The clinician shall therefore decide on the indication on a case-by-case basis according to the nature of the disease and its treatment and the need for monitoring post-treatment. Your clinician will discuss the need for a preliminary skin testing for hypersensitivity if necessary, or in the case of patients with severe or multiple allergies. Patients on coagulation medication or other substances known to increase coagulation time must be aware of the potential increased risk of bleeding and haematoma during and following treatment.

Your clinician will discuss with you any strategies we may employ to minimise pain during the procedure, such as the use of topical anaesthetics or ‘cold applications’.  Please advise your clinician if you have an allergy to, or have ever had a reaction to, any such anaesthetic.

The results of the treatment are typically permanent, however if you gain weight, the fat may return to the area treated. It is important to maintain a healthy weight and diet to assure the longevity of the treatment. If necessary, subsequent treatments can be carried out at 4-6 weekly intervals or whenever inflammation has settled.

Health and wellbeing can often be taken for granted, especially within our modern, fast-paced lives. But looking after your mental and physical health should be a priority to help you live a healthy life.   For this, think of yourself as a car: You check that it’s got enough fuel, air, oil, and coolant. Once a year, you get a professional to do an MOT to identify anything that needs changing to make it safe now or prevent it from being a problem. You may also take it in for a service to make sure it’s operating at its best. If something goes wrong, you take it into a garage. Blood tests can be viewed similarly: Some tests investigate when something doesn’t feel right. Other tests are a general annual MOT. Some blood tests help improve performance. With our range of home health tests, you can conveniently check your current health status and gain insights into your inner health. Book Appointment
